The history of “Second Hand”.
The shops of Second Hand appeared in middle 90s. It was related to simplified procedure for the leaving abroad, to the possibility to carry out the private business, to the demands for the imported article. Usually, the shops of Second Hand sells the things and footwear – exactly these goods come in Latvia from the foreign countries.
Exists the version that Second Hand came from England XVII when the kings donated their clothes to the most loyal vassals. But one of piece of a wardrobe of the royalty person - a royal mantle - was assigned only in temporary use. While the favourite vassal worn the royal mantle, he was considered as the main authorized person “second hand” (from here then came the name - Second Hand). Later all king's donated clothes started to call Second Hand. Afterward this term went to USA and with it started to indicate any clothes, passed on by someone.
The assortment of the shops of Second Hand is made by the already used, cut-priced or even timely unsold goods (in such a manner, the goods of Second Hand can be new). Mainly, Second Hand is imported from European countries or USA, Canada where are the specialized enterprises which deal with the collection of used clothes, their processing and delivery to the shops of Second Hand or the export to other countries.
The goods of Second Hand can be divided in particular groups by the different criteria:
«Original» became the most popular category. The clothes of this group of Second Hand are not sorted at all – it individually does by the retailers. The advantage of the “Original” is that by it belong really expensive originals of the famous designers. Besides in “original” can be sold the expensive small articles, bijouterie, money and jewelleries which are left in the pockets. Albeit, from such batch could be thrown away from 10 till 50% of goods.
The quality of the category “Original” is pretty much depend on the country-supplier. As explained by the entrepreneurs, the goods from Great Britain are notable for the high quality (containing many high –quality goods from the natural textiles), relatively high percentage of the different accessories are at German suppliers. The category "Original" from USA is less demanded as in such sacks are mixed all in a row. Although the American goods have own advantages – from USA is delivering the best jean clothes, T-shirts and training shoes. The category "Original" provides the wholesaler with 70-80% of sale, to the retailers – approximately with 50%.
The category «Mixed» includes the seasonal clothes with the different quality It provides the retail shops approximately 20% of sale.
«Assortment» is the clothes which are sorted not only in accordance with season but also by the look. Usually, the retail shops buy in addition such goods when find out that in the assortment is appeared the empty places. The clothes “assortment” is more expensive as abovementioned categories, not every retail shop can afford to purchase the big amount because it is packed in small sacks till 25 kg. This kind of Second Hand provides the retail shops approximately 20% of sale.
To the category «CREAM» belongs the various clothes not only the most modish, most qualitative and made by expensive materials. It provides the retail entrepreneurs approximately 10% of sale.
The entrepreneurs who deal with sale of Second Hand should acknowledge that this trade industry has own particularity, starting from assortment und finishing with the coming buyers. For instance, some people don’t want to purchase the used clothes because it could preserve the aura of the previous owner. However, more often the reasons are more banal: sometimes, the natural aversion not allow the buying the clothes of Second Hand because they were worn by unknown person (in same time such persons buy easily the used cars, often battered, from Europe and here the aversion fades ). In this case, both buyers and sellers can be tranquil: for all imported goods of Second Hand carry out the special, two-stage sanitization. At first, the goods expose to the special chemical compounds, after they get the hot vapour treatment. (It should be noted that such treatment is original litmus paper for the quality of the clothes: if the article don’t lose the look after such treatment then during the common washing nothing can happen (not stretch, not shrink, not discolour and so on). Therefore, any, even smallest possibility of the carry of disease is eliminated, including such diseases as the anthrax and the yellow fever. The certificate about the disinfection and disinsectization is issued which will be checked on the customs, crossing the state border of Republic of Latvia.
In Latvia, the market of Second Hand is quite saturated: even in the small towns can find more than ten such shop. Between such points of sale, can be distinguished the two profiles: the shops where sale by weight, and the trading enterprises where the articles are sold per item. The first ones usually belongs to the shops of the low price line where can find the well-worn or defective clothes due to it the businessmen prefer to not waste the energy and time for the sorting of such dress. Such Second Hand are diminishing progressively, and vice versa, every year the shops where the is selling each article separately become more and more, they modernize permanently. For instance, now appear the shops (both Second Hand and commission shop) where take only the branded items.
